An Introduction

This is Mostly 35mm — essays in analogue photography, mostly rangefinder, filed under Place, Travel, Films, People, Culture, Eating, and the other cupboards of a life spent leaving the house with a camera that still eats film. You have landed somewhere in the middle of one of them, which is how these things tend to go. The rest of the house is through the doors below……………………

Mostly 35mm is the longer form of the habit: personal editorial photography on 35mm film, written as essays rather than captions, and kept in folders that admit what actually gets looked at — Place, Travel, Films, People, Culture, Eating, cameras when they deserve it, and whatever else refuses a neat label. It is not a commercial portfolio. It is the record of standing somewhere damp or badly lit with an M3 or its cousins, guessing the exposure, and coming home with four frames that justify the rest.

I live between London and Stockholm, which is either a practical arrangement or an elaborate excuse to keep buying HP5. The pictures and the prose belong together; if one of them is doing all the work, something has gone wrong.
